A well respected detective in the Hong Kong Police Force who died from complications of a gun shot wound sustained from a gun battle against a gang of armed robbers in Lee Yuen Street East on 5th June 1939.
“DETECTIVE’S FUNERAL THIS AFTERNOON
THE FUNERAL OF THE CHINESE DETECTIVE, WAN MAN, WHO DIED AT THE QUEEN MARY HOSPITAL YESTERDAY OF WOUNDS RECEIVED IN LAST WEEK’S GUN BATTLE IN THE CITY, WILL TAKE PLACE AT POKFULAM AT 3 P.M. TO-DAY.
The deceased had been six years in the H.K. Police Force, and was transferred to the detective branch in October last year.
Hopes had been held out of his recovery, but his condition took a sudden turn for the worse early yesterday morning and he died at 11.10 a.m.
Thirty-one years of age, he leaves a widow and a three-year old son, and an aged mother, to mourn his loss.
The Commissioner of Police, heads of various branches of the Force, and Chinese and Indian detachments will attend the funeral and it is understood that H.E. the Governor will be officially represented.
Wreaths have been sent by the four Chinese members of the Legislative Council.
A subscription fund for the benefit of his dependents has been opened.”

Several hundred police officers, representing the European, Chinese and Indian contingents of the Hongkong Police Force, joined in the funeral procession yesterday to pay their last respect to the late Detective Wan Man, who died as the result of a bullet wound sustained in a battle against a gang of armed robbers in Lee Yuen Street East on June 5.
Thousands of Chinese bystanders lined the road in silence yesterday as the procession wended its way through the street, and especially through Lee Yuen Street East.
The procession was headed by Hon. Mr. C.G. Perdue, Commissioner of Police and Assistant Superintendents of Police, W. La B. Sparrow, G.S. Wilson, L.A. Searle and Mr. F.W. Shaftain, Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation.”

A COURAGEOUS ACT

Sir. – One of the two Chinese detectives who so courageously attempted to arrest the armed robbers who held up a man in the heart of the City on June 5, has succumbed to the wounds he received from the bandits at the time.
In appreciation of the gallant action of this Police Officer (Wan Man), we desire to raise a subscription in aid of his dependents, and accordingly appeal to the Chinese community for their generous support.
Donations will be gratefully received by any of the undersigned, and will be acknowledged in the press.
To open the subscription list Mr. Li Yau-tsun, C.B.E., has made a donation of $200.00.
