The old shop houses were or already are refurbished. The HK Urban Renewal Authority started the Heritage Preservation & Revitalisation Project on the houses 600-626 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok. They are Grade 2 Historic Buildings (pre-war buildings)
It is generally being called 618 Shanghai Street these days. I went in over the weekend. I believe they have kept the pillars, the facade on both Shanghai Street and Hong Lok Street, as well as the chimneys. The interior had been rebuilt in steel and concrete. All the original wooden structure could not be found anymore, or they are hidden.
It is now a low rise shopping centre, with restaurents.
I guess the only block of listed shophouse that is generally being kept in its original state is the Blue House in Wanchai. There are still people living in it.
