Joe's bar
Run by ex Royal Marine Joe Redmond. Usually had a "crippled" beggar outside who could sometimes be seen running for the bus after his stint.

Joseph Redlmond (Redlund?) was a great character; "All I have are my friends!" And one did not want to be anything but a friend to Joe.
His wife was from Shanghai and ran a bar down the street. Different milieu, however.
Joe's was strictly an expatriot trade, whereas his wife kept a beavy of bar girls on the premises to chat with the sailors who wandered through the doors.
When the Chunnel was being constructed, there were quite a few Scots about, mostly engineers. And the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment had rotated through Northern Ireland.
Joe's bar hosted our mess (HMAS Yarra) Christmas party. I was looking after our money and sprung the barman being a bit shifty counting the drinks. I called him out and demanded a a proper account. Subsequently Joe invited me around to his Apartment and after a long discussion he offered me a job to mange his interests as his understudy. He had no children and was looking to put in place a succession plan. His business interests were quite extensive.
I declined his offer but often reflect on what might have been.
Kowloon Bars
Does anyone remember 'Joe's Bar' ? Was in either Granville or Cameron Road and a favourite after work hangout for expats in the 1960 and 70's .
