NB Gwulo website moving to faster hosting

Submitted by Admin on Sun, 09/22/2013 - 22:14

Tomorrow (Monday, 23rd Sep) I'll move the website to a faster hosting service. I'm hoping it will make the site more responsive and so more pleasant to use, and cut down the errors and delays when posting new content.

Expect the site to be badly behaved tomorrow from time to time. I'll post an update when the move is complete, and ask for your help to let me know if I've broken anything.

Regards, David

21:55 23rd Sep.

The website is now running on the faster web server.

Several pages show red error messages - but the pages still show their information while I sort out the errors.

We can't zoom in on photos at the moment.

Onwards...

Fixed:

 - #1. Most of the red error messages are gone.

 - #2. We can zoom in on photos again.

Not fixed:

 - #3. Search. It is re-building its search index, and is currently 29% complete. So if you try searching for something, you'll only get results from the 29% of the site that has been indexed. I guess it'll need another 3-4 days to finish indexing the rest of the site. (And since the "What links here" tab on a page uses the search index, that is also showing incomplete results at the moment.)

 - #4. Red error message when editing a node.

 - #5. Not all images displayed at http://gwulo.com/all_image_gwulo. (Red error messages are displayed on the following page.)

PS Thanks Brian!

Fixed:

 - #3. Search. The index is re-built, so it should be working again now.

Not fixed:

 - #4. Red error message when editing a node.

 - #5. Not all images displayed at http://gwulo.com/all_image_gwulo. (Red error messages are displayed on the following page.)

If you spot any other pages showing red error messages, or anything seems broken, please leave a comment below with a link to the page and a few words about what the problem is.

Not fixed:

 - #4. Red error message when editing a node.

PS Glad to hear it's working faster for you. Over recent months I've seen people often posting the same comment twice - I think Gwulo was taking so long to respond, they thought maybe they hadn't clicked the 'save' button and clicked it a second time. Hopefully the speed-up will solve that.

There was a problem but when it happened to me it was because the post disappeared when being proof read. I posted again to find it was a repeat.

Picture upload was very slow though and I have noticed a tendency for the cursor to make its own mind up since the migration. May just be my fingers!

Hi David

am I doing something wrong? ... I've used the 1909 overlay map lots - really helpful - but clicking it today is only giving the modern map ... any thoughts?  thanks

Patricia

Fixed:

 - #6. Overlay maps working again. Patricia, thanks for pointing this out - I'd forgotten to copy them across to the new server!

Not fixed:

 - #4. Red error message when editing a node.

Fixed:

 - #4. Red error message when editing a node.

 - #7. There have been a few times when I have edited / created a node, and after clicking 'save', it just shows a white screen. I've increased the memory available, which I hope will solve the problem.

Please leave a comment below if you see any pages that show red error messages, or if anything isn't working as expected.

Fixed:

 - #8. I've fixed the causes of the red error messages on http://gwulo.com/search/node/pillbox%2014. (Thomas, there were a couple of problems. One was a side-effect of the new server running a more recent version of php. The other problem must have been there for several years, but no-one had found the search that would show it!)

 - #9. I'm crossing my fingers that I've stopped the delays and occasional failures when saving pages. They were side effects of some caching routines that were originally installed to make the site faster! They make viewing faster, but started causing problems when saving a page. The problems will only get worse as more pages are added, so I've disabled it. Saving a page is now a lot faster, and viewing a page is only slightly slower.

If you spot anything else that isn't working, please let me know in the comments below.
