In December 1929 the incumbent Governor of the Straits Settlements (Singapore) & High Commissioner of the Federated Malay States, Sir Hugh Clifford , resigned due to the ill health of his wife. The Governor of Hong Kong Sir Cecil Clementi was promoted to this more senior posting, leaving his Hong Kong position in February 1930.
