A celebration - does anyone know of what?

Mon, 09/22/2014 - 22:43

I read that it was unusual for Europeans to have contact with Chinese people in the 1950s. This photograph was taken,I guess, in the early 1950. One of the gweilos was my father. Does anyone on this site know what the celebration could be.

Thanks

Chris

Hi there,

It was very likely a wedding ceremony of sort.  The lady in heavy makeup by the left was wearing Chinese wedding dress (usually in read and gold), most likely the bride.  The gentleman in bowtie was most likely the groom. The two older gentlemen were wearing wearing tradional Cheung Sam (長衫, long outer garment which cover down to one's ankle, but with slits up to one's thigh on the sides so movements would not be restricted) were the elders of the family.

Best Regards,

T

Hi T,

The detail on this dress is fascinating,  were the dresses handed on from one generation to another or would it have been new?  I am intrigued as to what it is that the 'bride' appears to be holding in her hand,  do you know?
