Memorial stone

You can just make out the date of this Royal Navy officer's death as being 11 October 1834.  That was just a few months before Queen Victoria succeeded George IV to the throne of Britain and seven years before China ceded the island to Britain.  As such, this is probably the oldest British memorial in Hong Kong.  I took this photograph in the Protestant Cemetery at Happy Valley.  Apologies for missing the start and finish of some of the lines but it was tricky to photograph!  I see on Google that the stone has now been moved to the Hong Kong Museum of History and that he had had a somewhat controversial career in the Far East.
