I watched some movies at this theatre in the 1950s and its Chinese name is Fai Lok (happy/spelling?). Not far away on Wai Ching Street, on the west side was the Wah Nam Elementary School where I attended Primary 1. We had drill where one-fifth of my class including me would go hide in the staircase if an inspecter from the education department shows up.
What is the English name of that theatre (Dong Lok) on Nathan Road and Nullah Road? There was a nullah running by it on the east side.
The story by Oldtimer reminds me of my primary school days back in the late 1950s. My primary school, Nam Chiao School, was situated in Caine Road. It had 2 entrances, one at Caine Road and the other (back door) at Seymour Road. Whenever there was a school inspection, the teacher would randomly pick about 20 students and leave by the back door, heading westward to Bonham Road and to a small park at High Street (King George V park), or go east to Botanical Garden. The children would then play there for an hour or so, before being led by the teacher back to the school! This was a regular exercise for the school. The act was known as "run ghost" in Cantonese (a common expression used by illegal hawkers fleeing the police or the hawker control team) or rather, running away from the "ghost" - the school inspector.
My class size back then was around 60. I think the permitted number back then was 45. (Contrast this number with our "small class" education today!)
