Dr Frederick Bunje came from a well-establised Hong Kong family.

He was registered as qualified to practise medicine in Hong Kong in 1927.

He was appointed  Major in the Field Ambulance Unit of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps in 1941.

As a Eurasian  he wasn't interned during the occpation, but allowed to live at the French Hospital where he probably  formed part of Dr Selwyn-Clarke's team of public health workers, which also carried out illegal relief operations. He was arrested alongside Selwyn-Clarke on May 2, 1943 and eventually sent to Stanley Prison.
