In 2019 I posted a request for help under the title “Warrens at Sea” in locating the dates that my family left or arrived in Hong Kong by boat. I’ve been successful in finding 2 out of 6 of those voyages thanks to being offered a trial week to search the SCMP, which seems to be come up with more “hits” for a name than the mmis search facility.
I’m anxious to find out the dates when Cicely Warren, wife of my uncle, Leslie B. Warren, first and last left Hong Kong. She arrived as a newly-wed on 7 May, 1923 - https://gwulo.com/media/47318 - to be welcomed by her father-in-law, Charles Warren in his castle-like house, The Towers at the top of Broadwood Road. A month later he was dead and her 23 year old husband had to throw himself into managing the family company, C.E. Warren & Co. Charles Warren’s former partner, John Olson then arrived to claim the remaining amount of the Settlement owed to him from the breaking up of the company partnership, followed from England by his sister, Hannah Warren, Leslie’s Eurasian mother, a beneficiary of Charles Warren’s will. The next shock for Cicely would have been the August 1923 typhoon, which hit the top of Broadwood Road and flooded the Wong-nei-Chung area. At some point between Charles Warren’s death and the auctioning of the contents of The Towers, which left the couple without any household goods, Cicely must have decided to return to the relative comfort of her English family. I’m looking at dates between July 1923 and July 1924. She sailed from Liverpool on the Mentor listed as “Miss Cicely Warren” on 13 September 1924. I have already asked if anyone can help me with Cicely’s final departure with her children in the summer of 1938 – Mrs. L. B. Warren, Master G. Warren and Miss D. Warren.
David, thank you for your tutorial How to search the newspapers for a certain word or phrase - I have tried!
Voyage of Cicely Beatrice Warren 1923-24
A kind contact has found this record for me. I believe it is the first of Cicely Warren's voyages "Home". Unfortunately I can't see a precise date, nor the port of arrival:
