Mr Arratoon Vertannes Apcar was a shipping merchant and long time Hong Kong resident of some 38 years and descended from the Armenian Apcar family originally from Persia. He was the managing director and founder of Messrs. A.V. Apcar and Co. Ltd.. He started in the opium business but later founded the firm of merchants and commission agents which bore his name. For some years the firm was agents in Hong Kong for the Ultramarino Bank of Macao.

He was a large property owner in Hong Kong with holdings including Ava House, Ava Mansions, Armend Buildings and Observatory Villas. He was a member of the Hongkong Club and of the Jockey Club and was also a very keen philatelist.
