My late father, Bertram Ewart SUGARS was born at Walthamstow, Essex on 7th August 1899 and died in Sydney, Australia in March 1968.  He was married to my late mother Hazel Florence (nee Smith).  My mother and I were evacuated to Australia with many other HK civilians in June - August 1940 travelling in the liner SS Johan de Witt arriving in Sydney on 4th August 1940, via Manilla in the Philippines..

My father was 2i/c HK Government Stores in 1941 and was originally a member of the HKVDC but was seconded in July 1940 to the HK Auxilliary Ordinance Corps with the rank of Captain, A/Major.  His immediate boss was Bill Anderson (OIC HK Government Stores) who was appointed as Lt. Col i/c HKAOC in July 1940..

Pre-WWII home address was #1 Ventris Road, happy Valley and post-WWII it was #12 Ventris Road, Happy Valley. He was interned in Stanley Camp drom Dec 1941 to Sept. 1945.  Repatriated to Melbourne, Australia for POW Leave which expired in Sept. 1946 when he returned to his position as 2i/c HK Government Stores.  I believe that he retired in 1951 and retired to live in Sydney, Australia.
