He is described as a commercial traveller. He died aged fifty-six of arteriosclerosis and cardiac failure. He was British/Maltese. His declared friend in Camp was Mr F. C. Atkinson (Block A2 Room 22). He had quite a lot of possessions by camp standards, which went to the declared friend.
Achilles George Dandria (11/11/1888 - 7/12/1944) was my great uncle. He was born in Malta, and was one of nine children. He joined the army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Malta Regiment (KOMR). During WW1, he fought at Gallipoli alongside the 6th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment and was awarded the British 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal.
After WW1, he lived in Egypt for awhile, before arriving in Hong Kong sometime in the 1930s. He appears on the 1936 and 1941 Jurors List.
When he was interned he shortened his surname to Dann for reasons unknown. Perhaps he was trying to hide his British military service from the Japanese? Any thoughts would be helpful!
He cut off all contact with his family in Malta after WW1, and we have only just recently discovered what happened to him after that. Perhaps he suffered from PTSD? At least now we know where he is buried.
Any more information on Achilles George Dann (Dandria) would be welcomed!
