A thumb-nail sketch of Austin Coates is to be found on Wiki.
Many of the notes AC made while a District Officer in Southern District, Hong Kong are reproduced in the 2010 publication of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Hong Hong Studies Series titled "Southern District Officer Reports" edited by John Strickland.
A list of published books authored by AC is available on both Wiki and in the book aforementioned. Of his publications "Myself a Mandarin" recounts stories from the time AC was District Officer vested with the powers of a Special Magistrate. The chapter " The errant Cow" hilariously demonstrates the cultural differences between East and West on rural Lantau soon after WW II.
AC's other best seller " City of Broken Promises" was turned into a musical with the lead being taken in San Diego by, I think, Teresa Carpio.
AC was widely known as a sought after house guest in many of the homes of literary celebrities throughout Asia.

I've added a picture of the Coates family memorial plaque from Golders Green Crematorium so you can complete Austin's birth and death years.
