1920s Hong Kong submariners continued:
Just labelled "Menzies" in WR Fell's 1928-29 album, I assume this is George Cunningham Paton Menzies, future commander of the Submarine Depot Ship, HMS Forth in 1941, but here the walking companion of WR Fell. Is this above Aberdeen? By the look of his shirt tails, Menzies has probably just put his shirt back on for the photo.

What is the location of this photo?
Can anyone tell me where this 1929 photo was taken and what the expanse of water in the background is?
Tai Po Road - Tai Po Kau photo?
Hi Jill,
these hints (source: hkmaps.hk.html) appear to match: (1) 1922 map showing rail on water, (2) 1952.1 contour map showing M.S. 42 in Tai Po Kau Wai, (3) aerial photo 1963.2. If correct, the gentleman hiked here or got off his car and the photo taken near M.S 42 camera looking to Tolo Harbour. Regards, Peter
View towards Tolo harbour?
Thank you for researching the background location of this photo, Peter. The L4 submarine flotilla and HMS Titania were at Tolo in 1929. I've posted a couple of 1929 photos of Tolo harbour from WR Fell's album (which are in the 1920s HMS Titania and L Class Submarines photo gallery). I would expect the submariners to have been hiking in the area when on shore. Menzies was captain of one of the L4 submarines but I don't know which one.
