Mary and Lily who accompanied Thomas Neave and Jane Pattison Hedley to Hong Kong in 1914 were both born before Thomas and Jane married in 1893. Lily and Mary Hedley are both recorded as living with Pattison Hedley and wife Annie as their children 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1901 Lily Hedley is 10 and Mary Hedley is 2. Lily Hedley was baptised 3 March 1891 with Pattison Hedley and Annie as parents, Mary Hedley was baptised 20 September 1898 with Pattison Hedley and Annie as parents.
Thomas Neave married Jane Pattison Hedley (1870 - 1949) in 1893 Newcastle on Tyne and their children were Florence Agnes Neave born Hong Kong 18 October 1907 and Thomas Neave born about 1911 ? Hong Kong.
Ann, I've listed those events as a timeiline to help me get them straight in my mind. (It looks as though Mary shouldn't appear in the 1891 census?)
Could Jane have been the aunt of Lily and Mary, taking care of them after their parents died?
Regards, David
1870 - Jane Pattison Hedley born
1884 - Pattison Hedley married Annie Wheatley
1891 - Lily Hedley was baptised 3 March 1891 with Pattison Hedley and Annie as parents,
[Updated - see comment below] 1891 - Lily and Mary Hedley are both recorded as living with Pattison Hedley and wife Annie as their children in that year's census. (??? Not possible if Mary not born until 1898 ???)
1891 - Census shows Lily Hedley aged 2 months living with Pattison and Annie.
1893 - Thomas Neave married Jane Pattison Hedley
1898 - Mary Hedley was baptised 20 September 1898 with Pattison Hedley and Annie as parents.
1901 - Lily and Mary Hedley are both recorded as living with Pattison Hedley and wife Annie as their children in that year's census, Lily aged 10 and Mary aged 2.
1907 - Florence Agnes Neave born Hong Kong 18 October 1907
1911 - Thomas Neave born about 1911 ? Hong Kong.
1914 - Thomas Neave and Jane Pattison Hedley bring Mary and Lily to Hong Kong
1891 Census Lily Hedley 2 months living with Pattison and Annie. I made a mistake. It is the 1901 Census when Lily 10 and Mary 2 are living with Pattison and Annie.
George Talbot bap 1885, Rebecca Jane bap 1886, Ethel Annie bap 1888, Lily born c 1891. , Lena Gertrude born and died 1895, Mary born c 1898.
There is no record of a Mary Neave or Lily Neave born in County Durham. Thomas Neave married Jane Pattison Hedley 1893. They arrived in Hong Kong with a Lily and a Mary born before their marriage. It made me think of an uncle and aunt who had been childless for meny years and who appeared at my grandmother's house circa 1947 with a baby they had been "given" and wemt off to Canada never to return.
