Carol Bateman was a dance teacher in Shanghai before coming to Hong Kong.  She taught Greek dancing and Russian style ballet originally, but when she heard about the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) system, which began in the 1920s, she changed to that.  She was interned in Stanley Camp during the war.

She gets a mention in The Yip Family of Amah Rock during her time in Stanley Camp when mention is made of the British sense of humour and determination to make the best of things during the war and keep folk cheerful:

"Carol Bateman wrote and produced a ballet.  Tears of mirth ran down the cheeks of camp audiences as big-framed Europeans solemnly pirouetted in tutus contrived from mosquito netting."

After the war Carol Bateman set up her Dance School in 1948
