Clementi Smith
I think I can help. He is a distant relative. Have some info on him and will ransack the records tonight to see
Cecil Clementi (金文泰)
That would be marvellous - many thanks.
I look forward to hearing from you.

sinologist
Not only could speak Cantonese, he was a sinologist. These 4 Chinese characters 香海名山 on the archway of Tsing Shan Monastery 青山禪院 show his chops in Chinese calligraphy.

金文泰
Many thanks for these latest postings, Kevin.
Yes, he was a very able 漢學家。
Perhaps the best evidence of this is his translation (with a scholarly introduction) of what he called Cantonese Love Songs ,the 粵歐 by 炤子庸。 (Oxford: Clarendon Press. 2 Volumes, 1904)
Please do keep me informed of any ideas or documents or photographs you have about 金文泰。
I value your support.
感恩
