Connecting Photos and Places makes it easier for readers to learn more about the Places shown in a Photo, and to quickly see the photos we have that show a certain Place. e.g. here are all the photos on Gwulo that have been connected to the Place for the Lok Ma Chau lookout.
1. Connect any Photo to a Place
Let's say you see a photo on Gwulo that was taken at the Lok Ma Chau lookout, but it hasn't been connected to that Place's page yet. To add the connection, follow these steps:
(If you don't see the options described below, please make sure you have logged in to the Gwulo website, then try again.)
1.1 Scroll down the photo's page until you see a grey bar with the text > Add connection(s). Click the bar to expand it.
1.2 You'll see a heading Shows Place(s), with a box below it. In the box, type a few characters of the name of the Place, so in our example we'd type Lok Ma then wait for the computer to show us a list of all the matching Places we have on Gwulo. Find the name of the Place you want to add in the list and click it. The full name of the Place should then appear in the box, looking like this: Lok Ma Chau Lookout [????- ] (30365)
1.3 Scroll down the page until you see a blue Save button. Click the button to save your connection.
That's it! You should now see Shows place(s): on the photo page has been updated to mention the Place you just added, and this photo has been added to the list of photos on the Place page.
2. Connect a Photo to multiple Places
If you're looking at a photo taken in Central, you can probably see several Places that you'd like to add.
You could repeat the steps described above in 1. Connect any Photo to a Place but there is a quicker way: after step 1.2 where you added the first Place, click the Add another item button to add an extra box then repeat step 1.2.
You can repeat this as many times as you like, but don't forget to click Save when you've finished!
3. Connect a Photo to one or more Places as you upload it
If you're uploading a Photo and you want to link it to the Places it shows, you could complete the upload and then follow the steps described above, but again there is a quicker way:
On the page to upload a photo, look for the grey bar with the text > Additional information: Tags, etc. Click the bar to expand it, then you'll find a Shows place(s) section. You can then use the step 1.2 described above to add a Place, and step 2 if you need to add multiple Places.
When you've finished, scroll down and click the Save button to complete the upload and link to the Places at the same time.
If anything isn't clear, please let me know in the comments below.
Connecting a photo to a place
Hi David, the connection of a place to someone's photo is a very valuable tool and I won't miss it. But sometimes mistakes happen, so to me. I added Star Ferry Pier 3rd gen. to a photo, but it should have been 2nd gen. I saw that immediately after pressing "Add connection", but it was too late.
Is there any possibility to "undo" this entry while the file is still open? Regards, Klaus
re: Connecting a photo to a place
Hi Klaus,
If you're the author of the photo or the place, you can edit it and delete the mistaken connection.
Otherwise, just leave a comment on the photo or place page explaining the problem, and I'll delete the connection and the comment when I see it.
Regards, David
