I am a legal historian who is interested in the relationships between British colonial property law and Chinese nationalism. I began my archival work on this topic in 2008-10 when I was a CityU of HK visiting professor in the School of Law teaching trusts and common law method. The role of Jacks as Land Officer in Hong Kong (1905-1935) fascinated me so much that it formed two chapters of my PhD thesis. From this beginning, I did further archival, newspaper and travel records research to produce Going Native: The Passions of Philip Jacks (Melbourne: Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2016).
A brief biography of Mr Philip Jacks (1877-1941):
- Hong Kong Assistant Land Officer (1905-1916)
- Land Officer (1916-1935)
- Called to the Bar, Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London (1922)
- Acting Puisne Judge, Supreme Court (1927, 1928)
- Lay Member of the Church Body of St Johns Cathedral (1928-1935)
- Drafted Digest of Instructions from the Secretary of State for the Colonies (with Local Rulings) Regarding Disposal and Tenure of Land in the Colony of Hong Kong (1930)
- Acting Crown Solicitor (1930)
- Registrar of Marriages (1931-1935)
- Additional Judge of Criminal Appeal, Supreme Court (1933)
- Recipient, King's Silver Jubilee Medal for Services to Empire (1935)

Philip Jacks and William C. Jacks
Was Philip Jacks related to William C. Jacks of the engineering company? Likewise was Agatha Jacks, christened at St John's in 1911 from a different family?

Re: Philip Jacks and William C. Jacks
Interesting. I've not heard of William C. Philip Jacks' father was Edmund, his son was Harold and his only brother was Edmund Jnr.
Agatha was Jacks' sister. Born in 1880 eldest of the thre girls and 3 years younger than Jacks. Married in St Johns in 1911 on 13 June: http://gwulo.com/node/20803

Hi Jill,
William C.'s surname was Jack without an "s", see: http://gwulo.com/node/29538

Apologies for the red herring. I had seen the company name spelt both with and without an 's'. I wasn't sure which was correct.
