John Arthur Tarrant
John Arthur Tarrant was born in Gravesend Kent on 30 Mar 1872 and was a Civil Service Clerk before moving to Hong Kong. His father William Henry Tarrant was a Customs Officer. As already recorded, his wife Cecilia Millar died aged 62 on 23 Jan 1940. After his retirement he returned to the UK aged 74 aboard the Glenstrae arriving 9 March 1947. John died in Torquay Devon on 17 December 1958 aged 86. Following up on Philip Cracknell's note, Agnes Jane Millar travelled back to the UK with John in 1947 and she lived in Coulsdon Surrey until her death on 27 June 1952 aged 78. Probate records show that Agnes willed her estate to John. Although I have no evidence yet, I believe that Agnes may have been the younger sister of John's wife Cecilia Millar.
J A Tarrant's retirement
J A Tarrant's retirement dinner is described on page 12 of the Hong Kong Telegraph, 21st April 1937. It says he'd worked as the Secretary at A S Watson for 39 years, and that after retiring he'd stay connected to the company in an advisory role.
