Hung Hom Ferry Piers – A Timeline

Submitted by Klaus on Fri, 11/26/2021 - 02:25

Currently, a lot of comments are posted on Gwulo regarding the ferry piers in Hung Hom. Many of these are by simtang who was able to reveal the timeline of the different piers. I thought it would be valuable to collect all comments and create a summary of the development. This might not be fully correct, so any comments are welcome.

Temporary Hung Hom Ferry Pier [1988-1991]

Submitted by Klaus on Fri, 11/26/2021 - 00:37

Hung Hom Bay was reclaimed in two steps, the first ended in July 1989, the second one finally in December 1994. During the first phase, the 1979 Hung Hom Pier had to be demolished (done at the end of 1988), a new pier was planned and finally finished by November 1990.

For the intermediate period, a temporary pier was built. This pier was situated on a small piece of reclaimed land near Hung Hom Bay Centre off todays Hung Hom South Road, a pontoon was moored to the shelter/waiting rooms for boarding.

(Timeline added, based on the comments below:)

1963 - The pier opens for business. Initially it handles the Hung Hom - North Point ferry service that moved here from the pier off Gillies Avenue.

1975 - The Hung Hom - Wanchai ferry service also moved here. That service previously ran from the adjacent pier, slightly southwest of this one.

1979 - This pier is closed. Both ferry services move to the new pier, near to the KCR turntable.

(Timeline added, based on the comments below:)

1965: The pier opens for business in June. It handles the Star Ferry's Hung Hom - Central ferry service.

1967: The Star Ferry suspended their Hung Hom - Central service, owing to the riots. No other ferry service used the pier after this time.

c.1971: Aerial photos of this area show the pier was demolished in around 1971.

(Timeline added, based on the comments below:)

1963: The pier opens for business. Initially it handles the Hung Hom - Wanchai ferry service operated by HYF (The Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company Limited).

1975: HYF moves the Hung Hom - Wanchai ferry service to their other pier, a short distance northeast of this one. Star Ferry then rent this pier from HYF, to use for the Star Ferry's Hung Hom - Central ferry service.
