Mildred Elizabeth Constance DIBDEN [1905-1987]

Submitted by brian edgar on Mon, 07/29/2013 - 23:10

Mildred Dibden was a missionary with the evangelical Anglican Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society. She first came to Hong Kong in 1931, but had to go home because of a near-fatal bout of malaria. She had noticed the plight of Hong Kong's abandoned children, and was determined to help them, so she returned to the Colony in 1936 and opened orphanges in various locations including Cheung Chao. In 1940 she moved into an estate in Fanling and kept this home open, with the assitance of Ruth Little and Chinese staff, throughout the Japanese occupation.

Henry Ching writes:

She was Eurasian and was in HK during the occupation (she, like the vast majority of Eurasians, was not interned).

She was related to 4871 Pte Leslie A. Fox of No.3 Company HKVDC. He evaded capture and joined the BAAG’s China Unit and eventually the Chindits. Unfortunately, I cannot now recall if she was his sister or aunt.

Notes from Brian on the Stanley Camp Discussion List:

George Lyon-Mackenzie was one of the bankers kept out of camp to liquidate the HKSBC. He was too sick ever to be interned, but he assiduously smuggled money etc into Stanley, including from Rosary Hill.

He was previously in charge of the HKSBC Bank in Harbin - this 1940 article sees the city from the viewpoint of his wife and daughter:

George Wladyslaw PIO-ULSKI (aka George Parks) [1910-1994]

George Pio-Ulski's father was an officer in the Russian Navy who was listed as missing in action in 1917. The family fled Russia in the spring of 1924 because of their precarious position under the Bolsheviks - Mr. Pio-Ulski believed they were the last people to get exit visas.
