Everyone always takes a photograph of this view. Is anything new to be spotted on it?

Again, a popular structure to photograph in the immediate post war years.

Rarely did Jack attach an exact date.  Going 'down town' required one to be correctly dressed.  The military police would soon haul in anyone not looking smart, and nobody in the services was allowed to were civilian clothes at that time.  By the 1950s civilian attire was the norm when off duty.

This is a much earlier building than the ones that we used to visit in the 1950s. Does anyone know when it was demolished - or was it destroyed in a typhoon?

I'm aftaid that this is not a very high resolution image as it was cropped from a much larger one that included a lot of water.  In 2018, the Belfast was 80 years old.

This photograph is a bit of a puzzle.  I have no reason to suppose that it was not taken by Jack in 1945/6, because all the other photographs were taken on his camera and there are no commercial ones - probably not even available at that time.  However, notice the two very old naval ships, especially the one moored alongside at the Royal Naval dockyard (was it called H.M.S.

I don't recall seeing a stoopa at the garden in 1958.  Had it been demolished by then?  The hillside on the right was still in 1946 bare of all the squatters' huts that we saw in 1958.  It looks as though the terraces were still being cultivated but, even on my higher resolution copy, I cannot make out what all the white items littering the slope were.  In 1946 they cannot have been plastic! Any suggestions?  The blocks of flats on Wang Fung Terrace are in the top left corner.

When was the rather impressive pagoda demolished?

Is the gorge still there?  I think that must be Mt Butler behind the Tiger Balm garden.
