R.A.F. personnel living at or transiting through Kai Tak were always accommodated in Nissen huts, which were like ovens in hot weather and cold and damp in the wet.

In the very early 1950s, the large two storey  building at the lower right was living accommodation for R.A.F. personnel. It was built in 1938, and in 2003 was being used as accommodation for holiday makers at the Lyemun holiday park.  By then the old church contained a badminton court.  The single storey building nearer the sea was used as offices by the R.A.F. It was demolished some time ago and that area is now used by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Somebody badly misjudged his speed - or perhaps his brakes failed.

Unfortunately we have no names for the men on this photograph.  Only the guy in the middle of the front row seems to be concerned about getting sun burned - or maybe he was already suffering!

This photograph must have been taken from somewhere above PB 34 - which would still have been in its original condition.

I have decided to re-label this photograph from the original, 'Parade Ground'.  The huge, old pre-war parade ground for the camp was much larger, and in 2018 it is in use as a hard surface sports area.  The lorry park area on the photograph, had a purpose built garage/workshop just to the right of the lorries.  It still exists in 2018 and in 2003 it accommodated a play group for small children.  One wonders whether this was the scene of Driver Crocker's accident.

In 2003, most of the pre-war buildings were still in use, many bearing date stones, and in 2018 it should still be possible to identify the location of this piece of parking history, possibly using the next photograph labeled 'Lorry Park'.

The deep cutting at the top of the Cape Collinson road, where it joins the Shek O road, was just wide enough to accommodate the R.A.F.'s 3 ton lorries.  While walking through the cutting one airman came across an angry cobra blocking his way. He decided to wait until it had slithered to the other end rather than risk passing it.

R.A.F. Kai Tak was still well out into the country.
