The Reverend John Browne Ost succeeded in obtaining a Church Missionary Society post to Hong Kong in 1880 after frequent attacks of severe malaria in the Ningpo area of mainland China. In the Ladies Directory of 1887 Mrs Ost is listed at 5 Bonham Road and at the Church Missionary Society Sanatorium on the Peak in the Summer. John Ost started the Victoria Home and Orphanage. He was recalled to London in 1891 and posted to the Mid-China Mission in Chu-ki. Letters from from John Ost and his wife to the Church Missionary Society are included in Patricia P. K. Chiu’s chapter, "Female Education and the early development of St. Stephen's Church, Hong Kong" in ed. Philip L. Wickeri, Christian Encounters with Chinese Culture, HKU, 2015. His early letters from China are in a collection of letters from CMS missionaries held on microfilm by the British Library.
