An interesting photo but it is unlikely that this locomotive ran on the Sha Tau Kok branch.
The Facebook comment for this photo describes it as a metre gauge locomotive built for China. However, the She Tau Kok line was 2ft gauge and it does not match known photos of engines which ran on the Sha Tau Kok branch line .
The first two locomotives for the line were two 0-4-0 side tank locomotives built by Hudswell Clarke & Co. Leeds UK in 1906. They had been previously used during the construction of the Beacon Hill tunnel before transferring to the Sha Tau Kok branch in 1911.
Loco no 2 was withdrawn in 1923 due to a collapsed firebox.
Loco no 1 was sold in 1929.
The third locomotive to run on the line was a German built 0-4-0 well tank built by Orenstein &
Koppel in 1912, entering service in 1913 and sold for $400 in 1933.
The fourth and fifth engines were two 0-4-4 locomotives built by W.G. Bagnall Ltd. Stafford in 1923.They ran on the line from 1924 until its closure in 1928. They were sold off to at a loss to the Philippines in 1933 for $4,667.97 and $3,500.00. each.
The original purchase price was $30,138.45
