1961 - Wong Tai Sin Resettlement Estate

This image appears in Hurlimann, Martin, Hong Kong, Thames and Hudson, London 1962.

The accompanying text indicates that the iconic Hong Kong goods delivery vehicle of the era, which appears in the image, is parked on Lung Cheung Road (龍翔道)where it runs through the Wong Tai Sin Resettlement Estate (黃大仙徙置區).

See below for "philk"s correction of location.

I believe this was snapped on Tung Tau Tsuen Road rather than Lung Cheung Road, with Block 19 on the left and Block 8 on the right. The road where the bus is turning was the (no longer exists - it's now the access road to the multi-storey carpark) Ming Tak Street. On the right is the circular slope down to the public garden.

Thanks “philk” for your input. Hurlimann’s 1962 text accompanying the image reads as follows: The roads crossing the new estates reflect everywhere the rising standards of living. Here, Leung Chung Road in the Wang Tai Sin estate. I guessed, wrongly as it turned out, that the road featured in the image must therefore have been a misheard version of the recently opened Lung Cheung Road, which would have made for a very boring image for a photographer well-known for his interest in photographing people. Humanity abounds in Hurlimann’s shot, but I do now believe that we could be looking along Tung Tau Tsuen Road, with the former Ming Tak Street going off to the left. Thanks again “philk”.

Phil is right but it is a rather deceptive photo. One may think the slope on the right was rather steep.

Upon review, this section of Tung Tau Tsuen Road was a raised road. Blocks 19 and 6 (formerly called Blocks Q and D respectively) can be seen at the bottom at extreme right with estate blocks across the road parallel to Block 6 being lower than Tung Tau Tsuen Road.

As the Wong Tai Sin bus terminus was on Lung Cheung Road [see: https://www.hkmaps.hk/viewer.html (1962.1)], it would appear that buses would have used Ming Tak Street at the time for access to the terminus.
