The accompanying text reads: The Repulse Bay bathing beach, with a many-storied block of flats, Roydon Court, erected in 1959-60.
It appears that the Roydon Court complex was made up of 3 towers at the time that this photograph was taken (1961).
Roydon House School, Repulse Bay
During the very late 1950’s, before Roydon Court had been erected, the site was occupied by an old, two-storied residence with an extensive garden, which, prior to its demolition in about 1958, housed a small, progressive educational institution named Roydon House School. It was made up of a fee-paying junior school, comprising expatriate children whose fees subsidized a senior school made up of local, Chinese students.
I have no idea what relationship, if any, this short-lived, enlightened Repulse Bay educational establishment has with Hong Kong’s well-known, long-established school bearing the same name. Since the name Roydon carried through to the naming of Roydon Court, I am left wondering whether the original residence might have been named Roydon House. Perhaps someone in the Gwulo community will be able to shed some light as to the origins of the nomenclature that has eventually given rise to the naming of Roydon Court.
