I remember tried to survive in the 60s on the Barker Road, there were horrible typhoons, such as below
Typhoon Mary - 45 dead Typhoon Dot - 26 dead Typhoon Sally - 0 dead Typhoon Ruby - 38 dead Typhoon Wanda - 183 dead
everything were closed, included the Peak Tram, there were only 2 shops in the peak namely Dairy Farm garage at 100 Peak Road (no retail?), and the Park'N Shop Y. K. Lau Supermarket, other than that, you could buy pinapple bun (菠蘿包) from the Peak Cafe's vendors in a good day, but during typhoons, absolutely nothing !
