i found it in my grandfather's belongings. I am trying to trace his army career but hitting a brick wall as the dates don't add up. He has medals for service in Korea, but according to the service record I have obtained, he was never there. Also found a letter from the MOD which is different from the service record.

They look to be wearing the Scottish Tam O Shanter hat.
Do you have any background information about where the photo came from or who it belonged to?

If you can't find any record…
If you can't find any record of your grandfather in Hong Kong in 1947, perhaps the photo and medals were given to him by a friend of his?
Re: Service Record
Perhaps you can advise the service record that you have for your grandfather and where he was stationed?
The only picture i have of …
The only picture i have of him in the army is this one. He served first in the RAOC 15BN and then with the Argyll and sutherland highlanders
The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
The 1st Battalion The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were in Hong Kong in 1949. Tam Mi Camp (August 1949) is mentioned: http://argylls1945to1971.co.uk/AandSH_HongKong1949to50.htm
Your photo appears at http://argylls1945to1971.co.uk/h_young_pics060.jpg. Names given Privates Lapsley, Cowan and Young. Tam Mi Camp 1950.
The date of the photograph that you possess may have been written down many years later with an incorrect year given. My observation.
