The Belilios Convalescent Hospital was shown at the background. This hospital was demolished between 1952 and 1954 to make way for the present Fontana Gardens, the Buddhist Wong Fung Ling Middle School and the Sir Kadoorie Secondary School.

Hi Tai Wong,

I haven't found any mentions of this in the newspapers or on the web. Please could you let us know any sources for more information about it?

Regards, David

Dear David,

I uploaded an early 1950's map of Sookunpoo area ( in  Chinese) and it shows the three buildings of the Belilios Convalescent Hospital near the top of the map.

The 1930's Eatern Hospital Road picture was taken at the 1935 Indian Recreation Club Fourth Annual Athletic Meeting held on 28th April 1935 at Sookunpoo. I have downloaded thirteen pictures of this 1935 sport event from the uwants website of HK in Nov 2012. They included the complete programme of that day.

Hi Tai Wong,

Thank you very much for the extra map and photos. I haven't found any mention of the "Belilios Convalescent Hospital" in any documents on the web, so I wondered if you've seen that name used or if it is the translation of the Chinese name shown on the 1950 map? The building known as the "Belilios Reformatory" was very close to these three buildings, so I wondered if that might be what the 1950 map is referring to. Maybe the three buildings were accommodation or classrooms for the reformatory? I'll be interested to hear what you think.

There is some more information about the reformatory at: http://gwulo.com/node/13323

Hello David,

The 1950 Sookunpoo map used a classical Chinese term for this group of Belilios buildings that could mean both convalescent and reformatory. The three buildings could be the original Belilios Reformatory . Is there a way we can ascertain the purpose(s) of these buildings from their construction to demolition especially after the Second World War ? This site was developed into the present Fontana Gardens. May be the archives of the developer or the Lands Department can provide the answer regarding the final use of these buildings. Is there any Guulo.com user who knows the answer handy ?

Hello David,

There were a lot of developments from 1950 on that ridge behind the St. Mary Church and the St. John  Hqs Building. What was that building which stood immediately at the back of the St Mary Church and was demolished for the construction of the Sir Ho Tung Secondary School that opened in 1953 ?  Some people said that building was part of the St. Paul's Convent Hospital.

The building just behind St Mary's Church was the Belilios Reformatory. It looks like a castle, see http://gwulo.com/node/13323 and http://gwulo.com/node/13323/photos

If you have any maps that show lot numbers, it would be good to know the lot numbers for the Reformatory and for the three buildings on the hill. Sometimes the lot numbers are mentioned in the Public Works Department's annual reports, with details of what was being built there.
