I'm not sure of the exact year, but some of my father's photos are dated 1949, he left HK in early 1951, and this looks like Governor Grantham (judging from the Wikipedia image of him), who took office in 1947.
After the war, my father (Thomas Edgar) worked for the Cheung family's Garden Company, which, as his note on the back tells us, provided the tea for the ninth Exhibition. But does anyone know what this Exhibition was?

Re: Ninth Exhibition
The exhibition would have been the Ninth Hong Kong Products Exhibition held between 14 December 1951 and 3 January 1952 in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon at the corner of Nathan and Salisbury Roads. Hence the nine layer cake.
It was Governor Grantham that officially opened the exhibition.

Thanks for this. I have modified the date accordingly. Obviously someone sent my father the photo, as he left HK in early 1951.
re: Ninth exhibition
A note received by email, confirming the above:
The photo is taken at the event of Chinese Manufacturers Association of Hong Kong (CMA). I can see the CMA's logo in the lanterns which are hanging on the ceilling.
They also introduce this list giving the date and location of all 'The Exhibition of Hong Kong Products'.

Here's a pic of the entrance and facade of what I think is the 10th CMA Exhibition held in 1953/54.
