European House #27A, Cheung Chau [????-????]

Demolished / No longer exists

European House 27A by the Sin Yan Tseng/Fairy Well region of Cheung Chau may have been built in the early 20th century when Cheung Chau was found to have qualities similar to the Peak but at a fraction of the price.  Number 27A was certainly in place by 1935 as photographs attest.  Its numbering would suggest it was added after Houses 29 and 30 were built.

Looking at the roof plan, this appears to have been a south-facing villa near the cliff edge with sea views towards Lamma and Islands to the south.  It had an annex at the rear providing accommodation for domestics.

In the 1938 list of European owners of property on Cheung Chau, the owner of House 27A is given as Mr Kastmann, who may have been Karl A A Kastmann, a German merchant who worked for John Manners and Co before the war.

Today the Pacific Garden/Nautilus Villa development occupies the site.
