Hi there,

With the slight turn of Gloucester Road as seen above the pier would seem to be around Tonnochy Road.  The turning point would be approximately Steward Road.  The marker for the pier had been updated.

Hi there,

Last time while checking up those Hong Kong Year Books, I saw from the maps within (for the 1970's editions) showing another pier at Steward Road.  Does anybody have any photos show the Steward Road Pier or both piers please?

I could not recall exactly the routes, but I remember one of them go to Jordan Road and the other Hung Hom.

In the 1930 PRAYA EAST RECLAMATION SCHEME. FINAL REPORT. is written:

(c)   The construction of two public piers in reinforced concrete, one of these piers is situated at the end of Fenwick Road, and is, built T shaped, it projects a distance of 41 feet 4 inches from the sea wall cope and provides at its outer face a berth of similar length; the other pier is 120 feet 8 inches long and 35 feet 4 inches wide with four flights of landing steps and situated at the end of Tonnochy Road.

So Tonnochy Pier is the older one (from 1929).

I think the one in front is at the end of Stewart Road, and the other one at the end of Tonnochy Road. On the 1955 photo, only the one at Tonnochy Road is there. The other one was built later (and vanished soon afterwards).

A pier was built at junction of gloucester and Tonnochy in 1949 going to Yaumati.  A second pier was built in 1956 at the Stewart road junction going to Jordan Road. The original pier from now on was used for Kowloon City instead. In 1963, the Tonnochy pier was reconstructed to expand its service. It now served Hunghom on the left wing and Kowloon city on the right wing. 

In 1968, that part of harbour was reclaimed and the two piers were demolished. A new pier now appeared at the position of the present day Convention Road going to Hunghom and Jordan Road. In 2014, a new pier was built further north while the old pier was discontinued. (the one built in 1968 is still visible in the Aereal view of Google map)

  You can find a lot of photos showing the sides of those piers on Gloucester road. I am posting some front views of them here:

1956 newly built Stewart pier:

It will take over the Jordan Road route of the Tonnochy pier which will serve Kowloon city instead. The reason is that if not, there may be collision if their routes cross one another.

1968 new pier on reclaimed land, located at today's convention road:

Left side to Jordan Rd. Right side to Hunghom. The curvy road on the left goes from the gloucester-O'brien jucnction to the new pier.

Here another one showing both Tonnochy and Stewart piers found on Gwulo:

Date of photo should be between 1956 and 1963. Stewart pier was built in 1956. The Tonnochy pier shown here was before the addition of two wings in 1963. Actually the date should be 1956 or 1957. The latter was the year a rest area was built between the two piers.
