I recall that it was about this time that the Landmark was either built or refurbished. When it was completed, the owners had placed the panels around the atrium (?) which you can see in the photo.

These panels attracted some controversy because they depicted early scenes of HK and which were, to some, a bit too Colonial and even racist. As I remember, all they showed were scenes from the original Colonial coat of arms - i.e. a tea or opium merchant, on the waterfront, giving a coolie instructions.

The "powers-that-be" took the criticism seriously enough to commission people to ask the public what they thought of the panels! I certainly recall being asked when I went to look at them. All in the past now.
