KCR Railway Entering Kowloon

Mon, 09/22/2014 - 23:30

This photograph was taken 1909-1910 at Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon and shows the just completed Kowloon-Canton railway ( (KCR) track running from left to right across the picture. On the right, is the newly formed junction of Salisbury Road with Nathan Road (This name had only been changed from Robinson Road in 1909). Opposite the junction is a railway level crossing and road which led to the site of Holt's Wharf, which had not yet been constructed in this picture. To the right of this on the water front are warehouses "godowns", which appear to part of the Kowloon Wharf properties which stood at this location. ( The three- storey building behind the godowns might be the same building which appeared in a picture captioned "c. 1900 Mystery building on TST seafront [1895-1912] " posted on this forum last year. These buildings were demolished to make way for the new Tsim Sha Tsui railway terminus. ( From the P. A. Crush Chinese Railway Collection. )

Since posting this picture, I have just noticed after using the Gwulu zoom-in feature, that the railway track to the left of the level crossing has still not been completed. Coolies next to piles of broken stones can still be seen ballasting the track by packing in the loosse stones between the wooden sleepers.

Dear Sir:

I'm sure that this is a temporary railtrack in Sailsbury Road. Please see these book. There are similar photo. I'm sure that photo place is in Middle Road Car Park.
