Annelise, the photo you posted is from the very beginning of the garden. If you look closer (in the Public Library photo), the supports for young trees are still in place. 

In the following one from 1870, they are gone.

the date (1868) sems to be perfectly ok. We don't have additional and detailed informations how and when the garden was built in detail (HKZBG website states: Built in 1860 and partially opened in 1864, the Gardens was fully completed and opened to the public in 1871.)

When I found the photo from 1870 (at least attributed to that year), I first thought it was identical to the one you already posted. So I looked for details, and found the trees.

I was a bit excited about these details that I wanted to show these to you. That's all. So the date of your photo is certainly before mine. If the dates 1868 and 1870 are really correct, it doesn't really matter, but the timeline is correct.
