The marriage on 29th September 1904 was between my grandparents Hilda Maude Sleemin and Daniel Jaffé, after whom Jaffe Street in Hong Kongwas named.  On a trip to Hong Kong in 2011 I tried in vain to obtain a marriage certificate at the Family Records Office.  Strangely enough, also at St. John's Cathedral they told me they had no records.   I have also been in the Family Records Office in Islington London (since moved to the National Archives in Kew) but apparently they had no Hong Kong marriage records.  Who can help me find a copy of the marriage certificate?  My main interest is to find out the father's name, profession etc. given for my grandmother, as I have run into a brick wall on her.  For my grandfather I have plenty of family history.  Grateful for any help!

The St. John's Cathedral records are held by the Public Records Office.  They have some gaps in years.

Search "cathedral marriage"

I did the transcription.  Is her maiden name Sleemin with an i ?

There is also a card in their Carl Smith collection.

3   DANIEL JAFFE; HILDA MAUDE JAFFE 1905 112601

Thanks, Annelise, but maybe I am stupid, I didn't get to any postive results with the link you indicated,  neither with the "cathedral marriage" nor with the "Carl Smith collection".  On the marriages I got as far as Series  HKMS40 REGISTERS OF MARRIAGE ,   27.03.1838 - 05.04.1975

http://www.grs.gov.hk/PRO/srch/english/show_detail.jsp?recordkey=610772&srchscreen=sys_all&source=Y&version=internet

I ended up on a page indicating File  HKMS40-1-13 which is 1838 – 1876 and the next one is HKMS40-1-14 covering 1928 to 1942

When we were in Hong Kong 2011 (a one-off trip of a lifetime for our ruby wedding and unlikely to be repeated), we visited the Public Records Office in Kwuntong.  The only info they could give us searching Jaffe and Sleemin was a copy of a baptismal certificate of my uncle Cecil Jaffe in 1905 (which may well be the item in the Carl Smith collection) plus a newspaper article years later about the naming of Jaffe road.  At PRO they recommended we went to the BMD registry in Queensway, where we then applied for a marriage certificate (nothing found unfortunately) and at St. John's Cathedral they told us those years were missing in their registers. I know the actual wedding took place in the Peak Church (as did my uncle's baptism).  I have a copy of the wedding invitation which I would be happy to upload to Gwulo, by the way, if you are interested.  Sleemin with an I is the correct spelling, which is quite unusual.   I actually have her full christian names as Florence Hilda Maude Mary in other documents.  I haven't found her birth certificate so far either, tho' she always said she came from Plymouth, England and was born on 16th January 1873.

Is there any way you can just send me the full transcription of the marriage entry?  I'd be immensely grateful.  As I mentioned previously, I really only want details of her father, nothing else.  I feel with that info I might be able to research more about her and her ancestors on census records etc.  Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.  Best wishes, Sylvia
